GIS and rural development

We are currently assisting consultants working with the national Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in addressing land claims. Using local expertise and aerial photography, GIS can paint a picture of how settlement patterns and land tenure have changed over time. Historic aerial imagery is provided by Geo-Spatial Information in Mowbray. This is geo-referenced and combined with cadastral farm boundaries using GIS. The resulting maps assist decision makers in determining whether homesteads or dwellings were found in the portions of land being claimed.
